What a wonderful expansion on the idea to "Know Yourself" in an unselfish way. Thank you Maryl for this clear illustration of the importance feeding the right "wolf". I like the idea of the bad wolf "yielding" to the well fed good wolf.

The old Indian told his grandson the story of the two wolves we carry inside: the one evil; anger, envy, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, and the other one good; joy, peace, love, hope, humility, generosity, truth, compassion.
When the child asked "Which one will win" the old man said: "The one you feed."
What wolf ―or state of thought― are we going to feed today?
What qualities will we nurture?
Christian Scientists chose Love, "for love alone is life." CS Hymn 30

Such a clear analogy of the action of Christ. The analogy points the way to appreciate those qualities that represent my and everyone's true identity. When I don't feed opposing mental or emotional elements, even if they insist on being fed, they have no life.

Thank you Maryl. This wonderful lift prompted me to realise that, in the words of our hymnal:
Hymn 3:1
A grateful heart a garden is,
Where there is always room
For every lovely, Godlike grace
To come to perfect bloom.
A garden in perfect bloom does not just happen. The garden must be nurtured, seeded, tended, weeded and fed just as our grateful hearts and minds need the nourishing truths mentioned.
The story of the two wolves reminds me of the story of the man who was asleep and dreaming that he was being chased by a dragon. As fast as he ran the dragon was closing in on him until the man was underneath the dragon and the dragon was towering above him.
"What happens now?" gasped the man.
"I don't know" replied the dragon "what happens next is up to you, after all it is your dream!"

Thank you for this lovely Lift, and so true. We are often not conscious of how much we feed the unrighteous thought claiming space in our consciousness, simply by agreeing with it, tempted as we are to feel that we are badly done to in some way, by persons or circumstances. The thought that we can turn away from those feelings and feed the righteous thoughts, which come to us from God and make up our true selves, by agreeing with and expressing God's qualities instead, is very helpful indeed. Thank you.

Thank you so much. Maryl. This is a great story, and one I heard when I first came down here to the Sunshine Coast seven years ago. It wears well. Of course when we first start to study Christian Science so much that is obviously not good, is quickly eliminated. But this is a continual work of love, and will keep us busy for life. As Mrs Eddy said to a friend, "I pull the weeds out every day, and then next day I need to pull them out all over again." Certainly a practising Christian Scientist needs to lovingly tend the good wolf every day.

Dear Maryl,
Thank you for this wonderful Lift. I found it especially helpful to have heard of the importance of feeding the right 'thought'. I awoke this morning clinging to the importance of adopting a right thought regarding a number of areas of my life especially three areas that take up a lot of my time.
The other day I had misplaced a very important set of keys and my fear was that they fell out of the car on one of my rounds around the island. A week had passed and after some prayerful work and searching they were not found.
I stopped and then acknowledged that the keys were not lost, but that my thought about them had been misplaced as to where they were. I needed to align my thought to Truth (God). I had to handle the thought of being careless, unfocused and always tired. Instead, I listened. The temptation to get up and search again was squashed as I realized I was not listening to right information about my identity and action.
That morning a strong yet loving thought interrupted my routine and reminded as to where I had placed the keys and why I had put them there. They were in their rightful, safe place; my thought had to be there as well in order for me to see the already established harmony. I had to replace the voice of fear and negative outlook with the voice of wisdom, knowing that God is in control.
Last night it rained and the morning, like this Daily Lift, is fresh with renewal, clarity and expectation. Thanks to all.

"I will listen for Thy voice, Lest my footsteps stray" what wonderful advice from "Feed My Sheep" by Mary Baker Eddy (hymn 304). When a critical thought tries to take control in my thinking I silently, but strongly, say "shut up!!!" And then replace it with something loving. I'm striving with humility to reduce these occurances to nothing, as no part of my identity as the image and likeness of God. It's a work in progress. Thanks, Maryl,
for the advice to feed only the good wolf.

Such a wonderful metaphor, the two wolves. Yes Lori #40. I do that too, I get a thought that I recognize as error and mentally say, "No! Enough!" and then reverse the thought to what the pertinent true or good thought would be. Proverbs 23:6-7 tells us:
6 Eat thou not the bread of him that hath an evil eye, neither desire thou his dainty meats:
7 For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he:
It's a similar thought to starve error and feed truth. The error or evil is just illusion and what we feed that is good is the only true reality, aligning ourselves with Divine Mind. As we think in our hearts, so we are.
Thanks so much for this lift Maryl and to everyone posting their insights. This is a great way to start the day!

Thank you, Maryl, for “Nurturing right thinking and acting … choose a quality … our true nature wins out … we truly are children of God …”
The Cherokee Grandfather story is one of my favorites. It fits well with Christian Science, which encourages us to and instructs us in how to choose the right wolf or right thinking. As a Scientist, I test to prove for myself what’s true, according to God's laws. So, after hearing that story, I did what you suggest. I chose a quality of character and just lived it on purpose all day and it did grow! And as I choose daily, what blessings flow!
Living under God's laws demands our full attention to the high standards set forth in Christ’s Christianity. But it’s not as hard as it might seem because, as you say, it’s our true nature. So, the wolves become increasingly easier to identify. We’re alone in which wolf we choose; but, we have each other’s example and encouragement in shared testimonies, as we praise our God/Good by how we live, beginning in thought. Deep thanks for sharing the Grandfather's testimony! Our Father is over every Cherokee and all! And I praise our God/Good!
I would only add: I’ve learned that we don’t have both good and evil within us. But they seem to be! In fact, evil is not a power at all. But it seems to be! We need to challenge every mortal “seeming” with the “seamlessness” of the Truth of our being. Good is the only power and we are in the image and likeness of Good only. We need to feed that good wolf! :-)

After hearing today's Daily Lift, I looked up the word Nurturing in the Dictionary, (Merriam Webster) and found one of the definitions to be very interesting. It means to TRAIN. So to nurture thought is to train the human mind to let go of it's false self and accept "That Mind which was also in Christ Jesus." In this way, we realize our true thoughts of accepting our true view of ourselves and FOREVER release the false.
Daily Lift Team:
Quote is the sixth Tenet from Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, page 497, line 24:
And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for
that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to
do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and
to be merciful, just, and pure.

What an unforgettable Lift. Although I do not believe in starving any animal, the 'bad wolf'' is now on a starvation diet unless he changes his ways and becomes a 'good wolf''. I always try to watch my thoughts but sometimes those bad negative feelings try to creep in, but no more.

Thank you. A good way to keep our choices simple. And thank you #63 for underscoring the fact that absolutely there is no dualism in God, Life, or we admit to more than one power, mind or source. Impossible if we ground our thought daily on the First Commandment, the Oneness and Allness of good, God, of Spirit, Mind, Principle. The other is suggestion and has no influence or power over our consciousness or of others'. Mary Baker Eddy says in Science & Health, page 340 that the "First Commandment is my favorite text." The entire paragraph illustrates the incredible power and might of how obeying this Oneness can change the world!

Waking up at 3 am this morning negative thoughts started arguing in my head for next two hours. They were about a project I was working on. They convinced me It should be abandoned, as it was not coming together according to "my" time table and the "logic" in my head. At 5am I decided enough was enough. I knew I would find help in the Lesson. The third section about Spirit having no element of self-destruction and also that evil is destroyed by the sense of good, got my attention and I was able to let go of the negative thinking and resolved to go forward with what was in my heart and not "my" head. Later in the morning I read the "perfect" Daily Lift and so appreciated the example of feeding the wolves to the experience, leaving the evil wolves to starve and self-destruct and the good wolves to thrive and prosper as well they should!

I used it in my education classes for prospective teachers, both in Child and Adolescent Literature as a very practical piece of oral literature and in student teaching for both practice and for mentoring with children--so very useful. Wonderful and very interesting message/Lift, thanks Maryl! The 'Cherokee Indian' story made me think of Jesus' Biblical parables of the "sower & the seed" and of the "tares & wheat" - both in Matthew Ch.13. Included in the book, "We Knew Mary Baker Eddy, Second Series" (pp.24-25) is a brief explanation by MBE of the "tares & wheat" parable. I have a bookmark entitled "Advice from a Wolf" --- a 'Good' wolf. (The advice may of course, be interpreted both spiritually and practically.) Here's a sampling: "Be at Home in Nature, Keep Your Den Clean, Stand Fur What You Believe, Stay on Track, Be a Leader". Thank-you, all Lifters and the DL team! God bless. Amen.

I love my loving, spontaneous SMILING mother's religion, Christian Science. You couldn't be more right about choosing the right, loving, Godlike thought. In a large real estate Board of Directors meeting, the Board asked the secretary what she thought of the new law proposed to undo red-lining real estate in the '60s. Her response was a quote from the Bible she knew so well, 'Have we not all one Father, hath not one God created us.' There was no more discussion on the subject only quiet. I believe her response to their question was responsible for moving us out of what was to be a violent seemingly war zone that seemed hellish according to the news. Our new surroundings were quiet, peaceful even heavenly. She and her family didn't have to 'go through' the hell. She stood for Truth and was not afraid to speak it although it seemed an unpopular idea at the time with the people she worked with. Her practice of Christian Science is how I will always identify this religion.

Along the lines of what Tony shared, I share this from S&H: “Gazing at a chained lion, crouched for a spring, should not terrify a man.” So don't argue against your guaranteed safety, eternally secured joy, or heaven-decreed health, or, that "Thy Maker is thy Husband." (Bible)
And this from Miscellaneous Writings: " Envy, rivalry, hate need no
temporary indulgence that they be destroyed through
suffering; they should be stifled from lack of air and freedom." Like the "bad wolf" do not feed these passions, for, as many have already observed, "the wolf shall lay down with the lamb." The "bad wolf" is a lie, and we never feed a lie.

Thank you, Maryl, that was so very helpful. While sitting here and absorbing that wonderful DL, I was thinking that we all have a choice and I remembered that the word 'choice' was in a favourite hymn - No.258, which starts off:
"Oft to every man and nation
Comes the moment to decide,
In the strife of Truth with falsehood,
For the good or evil side."
Indeed, what state of thought will we feed today? What quality will we nuture today?
Thank you again.

Along the lines of what Tony shared, I share this from S&H: “Gazing at a chained lion, crouched for a spring, should not terrify a man.” So don't argue against your guaranteed safety, eternally secured joy, or heaven-decreed health, or, that "Thy Maker is thine Husband."
I am presently working on cherishing certain qualities I want to be more clear about.
Thank you Maryl!

DL team, use this version:
Along the lines of what Tony shared, I share this from S&H: “Gazing at a chained lion, crouched for a spring, should not terrify a man.” And another similar quote: “By looking a tiger fearlessly in the eye, Sir Charles Napier sent it cowering back into the jungle." So don't argue against your guaranteed safety, eternally secured joy, or heaven-decreed health, or, that "Thy Maker is thine Husband."

- 2/12/2013The old Indian told his grandson the story of the two wolves we carry inside: the one evil; anger, envy, arrogance, self-pity, resentment, and the other one good; joy, peace, love, hope, humility, generosity, truth, compassion.
When the child asked "Which one will win" the old man said: "The one you feed."
What wolf ―or state of thought― are we going to feed today?
What qualities will we nurture?

- 2/12/2013Thank you Maryl.

- 2/12/2013Thank you for this lovely Lift, and so true. Thank you.

- 2/12/2013Thank you so much.

- 2/12/2013Dear Maryl,
Thank you for this wonderful Lift.

- 2/12/2013"I will listen for Thy voice, Lest my footsteps stray" what wonderful advice from "Feed My Sheep" by Mary Baker Eddy (hymn 304).

- 2/12/2013Such a wonderful metaphor, the two wolves.

- 2/12/2013Thank you, Maryl, for “Nurturing right thinking and acting … choose a quality … our true nature wins out … we truly are children of God …”

- 2/12/2013After hearing today's Daily Lift, I looked up the word Nurturing in the Dictionary, (Merriam Webster) and found one of the definitions to be very interesting.

- 2/12/2013What an unforgettable Lift. Although I do not believe in starving any animal, the 'bad wolf'' is now on a starvation diet unless he changes his ways and becomes a 'good wolf''. I always try to watch my thoughts but sometimes those bad negative feelings try to creep in, but no more.
Thanks so much Maryl, and the rest of the Daily Lift team. You are being fed by our Love.

- 2/12/2013Thank you.

- 2/12/2013Waking up at 3 am this morning negative thoughts started arguing in my head for next two hours.

- 2/12/2013I love that story, Maryl. Thanks so much for sharing it. I used it in my education classes for prospective teachers, both in Child and Adolescent Literature as a very practical piece of oral literature and in student teaching for both practice and for mentoring with children--so very useful. It also illustrates that the Christ idea has been teaching and mentoring in all ages and in all cultures, sharing the truth about our need to discipline our thought and nurture our spiritual senses to know and feel who is feeding us.

- 2/12/2013Wonderful and very interesting message/Lift, thanks Maryl! God bless. Amen.

- 2/12/2013WOW beautiful lift, If we thought of Christ Jesus being with us during every conversation we had with others, what words would we choose to say, which words would we choose to not say. what thoughts would we choose to think and which thoughts would we cast out of thought. "The Battle is not yours , but Gods.

- 2/12/2013I love my loving, spontaneous SMILING mother's religion, Christian Science.

- 2/13/2013Along the lines of what Tony shared, I share this from S&H: “Gazing at a chained lion, crouched for a spring, should not terrify a man.” So don't argue against your guaranteed safety, eternally secured joy, or heaven-decreed health, or, that "Thy Maker is thy Husband." (Bible)
I am presently working on cherishing certain qualities I want to be more clear about.
Thank you Maryl!
Thank you DL community, love you, love all the wide and varied posts both in content and geographically. How special a forum this is, this oasis, where we are all able to gather, drink, comment, share..

- 2/13/2013Thank you, Maryl, that was so very helpful.

- 2/13/2013DL team, use this version:
Along the lines of what Tony shared, I share this from S&H: “Gazing at a chained lion, crouched for a spring, should not terrify a man.” And another similar quote: “By looking a tiger fearlessly in the eye, Sir Charles Napier sent it cowering back into the jungle." So don't argue against your guaranteed safety, eternally secured joy, or heaven-decreed health, or, that "Thy Maker is thine Husband."
